A jaw-dropping tour of Joburg's most infamous and iconic building. Featured in box office movies such as Chappie and District 9, find out why it is so renowned around the world!
Today the Ponte Tower, also known as the Vodacom Tower has become a model for the regeneration and revitalisation of Joburg's inner city. This building was once symbolic of crime, where gangs and squatters hijacked the building, pushing out its residents. The core of the building had garbage that rose 13 storeys high!
We start the tour at our community centre where we introduce ourselves ourselves and illustrate the relevance of our location. Our guides will take you through a chronological journey, helping better understand the building's history and context.
We will go through the early days of grand opulenceold photographs of Ponte residents or Goldreichs restaurant in Hillbrow tower images, government red-lining and social oppression. We will also detail the stories of urban decay and the building's resilient nature through complex economic times.
For added excitement and to complement the experience, enjoy a drink from the 51st floor of the building. Take in epic views of the massive urban sprawl of Johannesburg!
'I have driven past Ponte and through Berea / Yeoville to and from work for the past 8 years and every time I drive past I wonder what Ponte looks like from the inside. Is it still the scary place we grew up hearing about? This tour with Nick blew my mind. Ponte has gone through such a change through the years and to finally experience the building from the inside out has been a wonder. My perceptions of the tower, the people and the area around Berea, Yeoville and Hillbrow are forever changed. Dlala Nje is such an inspiring place and I am so glad that the money we paid for the tour will go to the upliftment of the community in and around Ponte. Thanks to Nick for the amazing insight and knowledge of the area that he calls home and I know for a fact, I will be back with friends to do all the other things offered by this wonderful organisation.'
